With the government delaying its proposals to reform SEND for children it means yet again parents have a delay in striving to get the best for their child. Special Needs support for children in schools has always been problematic for decades. Whether using the Statement of Educational Need or the Educational Health Care Plan system delays and lack of resource continue. Local Authorities in the main have disbanded their specialist support teams. Teachers no longer get the advice and support they so often need. Too often for parents there are long, long delays to achieving help in the first place.

Yes there are limited resources. Yes SEND is complicated. But we must invest and support all children and in particular those with additional needs. So what is the answer? A rapid assessment of the child by professionals and then clear advice to parents and school - with ongoing advice and support as needed. Additional investment will be needed. Each child with SEND is unique and deserves an individual programme that everyone understands and ensures the child gets the best possible and available support.
